By Bernard Mills (Published by Platform 5)
Two fabulous books filled with images from the camera of Bernard Mills. Photographs from the 1960s to the current day, capture the everyday normal and the unusual along the whole route. As you might expect with such a route with its history of being the last hurrah for may classes, pictures of Hymeks, Warships, Westerns, Hoovers, Sulzers (large and small - 47s, 25s and 33s) abound. But who knew that 25s worked to Clapham Junction, I didn't.
Part 1 covers the route, from Waterloo to Exeter in three chapters:
- Waterloo to Battledown Flyover
- Andover to Salisbury and Yeovil
- Yeovil to Exeter Central
This volume also has photographs of peaks, a 40, a 73, Southern Region DEMUs, DMUs and HSTs.
Part 2 covers the route from Exeter to North West Devon and Cornwall in three chapters:
- Exeter to Barnstaple
- Barnstaple to Torrington and Ilfracombe
- Coleford to Okehampton, Plymouth and Noth Cornwall
This volume also has photographs of a 22s, 31s, 37s, 20s, and Western Region DMUs as well as a 201 and a 205.
The caption text is highly informative and Maps are provided which are especially useful when looking at the long lost routes.
