The Way Forward charts four years of preservation and main line activities of The Fifty Fund from November 2001 to December 2005. This period has seen the Fund's three locomotives - 50 031, 50 035 and 50044 - together with Project Defiance's 50 049, continue to fly the flag for their class in preservation and on the main line. Jonathan Dunster (Fifty Fund Chairman from 1992-2006) recalls the highlights of an exciting period with scenes that include... 50 031 Hood at Poulton -le-Fylde on the Blackpool North branch, it's trip to Ashford in Kent, its visit to the Mid Hants 2004 diesel gala together with its Brighton Belle' excursion to Brighton, the first 50 back at Kings Cross since BR days, its return to former Southern haunts at Vauxhall and New Maiden.

 

50 031 with 50 049 Defiance workings include: the GTRM Auto-ballaster from Bescot to Kidderminster and over the SVR, a smoky departure from Paddington, towing kettle 'Union of South Africa from Crewe to Carlisle, their trip to the EWS St Blaxey staff open day, their visit to North Wales to collect 47 750, their first Anglian outing to Kings Lynn, their trip to Kingswear, their appearance at Arriva's loco-hauled Rhymney farewell event - and the series of Riviera's Blue Train excursions in 2002 to York, Carlisle, Fishgaurd and Llandrindod Wells.

 

Also included is extensive coverage of their ground-breaking visit to Fort William, Mallaig and Dundee in March 2005.50 035 Ark Royal -hard at work on the Severn Valley Railway.50 044 Exeter - departing from Brush Traction following generator repairs, its re-paint and transformation into D444 at Old Oak common and its appearance at the Mid Hants 2004 diesel gala.
